but I can fantasize about it.”
“I’m an artist who cannot repair a car
but I can fantasize about it.”
My experience of living in solitude, in a Finnish village Ratula in Kymenlaakso,
significantly shaped my world perception, painting process, and the topics I represent
in my artworks.
Our house used to be a farmer’s house, that’s why you can find tons of technical
suppliers for repairing almost everything in the world. Except these, you find huge piles
of trashy stuff, mainly placed inside a big barn and surrounding outside area.
I like harmony. This mess was making me depressed. One day, during the walk to the
composter, with bio garbage, I noticed it. That trashy stuff has its own beauty!
In the painting series “AutoMoto” I portray car engines, tires, broken lawnmowers, and
canisters of spoiled oils. My painting process extends from an indoor studio to the old
barn and garden.
I work with a traditional medium of oil on canvas. During the last years, my art evolved
from colorful objectionable paintings into abstracts. It happened behind our barn with
old rusty water boilers. Their shapes are simple cylindres. Suddenly I thought about
my work differently. I started to simplify objects. My interest headed towards painting
as a mass and substance. I process it in a new way. My artistic expression has always
been large-scale painting, most of my paintings are created in formats with at least one
side length of 200 cm. I apply colors with a brush to the canvas with a paste layer and
then spread it and blur it into the absence of representational objects.
